Bear Snores On

Bear Snores On is a great book by Karma Wilson. It was actually Karma's first book published in 2002 and it became a huge hit. The book seems to have a lot more text than the typical board book. But, it is a lot of fun to read and tells a wonderful story. The story takes place in a bear's cave. But, the bear is hibernating and lots of other animals come in to get out of the cold. The bear eventually gets woken up by all of the fun the other animals are having. I love the pacing and rhythm of the book. The illustrations by Jane Chapman are very realistic and expressive. Karma now has 30 different children's books and there a few others with bear and his friends. More Great Karma Wilson Books

Mommy Calls Me Monkeypants

Tommy absolutely loves this book. Mommy Calls Me Monkeypants is a wonderful boardbook by J.D. Lester. Lester provides a great and well rhymed story. The book looks at many of the often silly nicknames given to children. Tommy has my wife and I reading this over and over all of the time. He is always pointing at the playful pictures of the different animals. Hiroe Nikata uses watercolors to create the bright and cute pictures. The two worked together on their most recent book called Daddy Calls Me Doodlebug. This is the same idea with nicknames but, ones that daddy would give. This is set to be released on April 27th 2010. But, somehow you can already preorder it on Amazon.

Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton makes some of the best board books. My kids have all loved her books. It is also a lot easier for me to read them over and over since they are so much fun to read. She uses great animal characters that act like people. Sandra started out as a card designer and even makes music too. Some of our favorites are Moo, Baa, La LA LA, But, Not the Hippopotamus and Horns to Toes and in Between. My 17 month old son is always going to get one of these books. He brings it right over and sits on my lap. Whenever I read Moo, Baa, La La La he does a great job repeating some of the words. I will say "The cow says" and he will finish it with the best "Moo" that he can. He continues repeating each of the different animal sounds when it is his turn. Sandra's books are just great at getting my boys attention. Here you can learn more about Sandra Boynton and Her Wonderful Board Books

About Board Books

Board Books are the best way to introduce toddlers to books. Board books are extremely durable and have thick pages for young kids to easily turn. They are also a smaller size with fewer pages. They are often brightly colored with various types of large text to capture a child's attention.
I have 3 boys and they have all absolutely loved their board books. Typically they will like a few of their books a lot more than the others. Make sure you like them too because you will be reading them over and over again. Board books are pretty simple in their design but, some of them are truly amazing in how much entertainment they can provide. With such few words involved in the book the writer really needs to make sure they use the best words possible.
